DURHAM – The preseason accolades continue to roll in for
Brennan O'Neill and
Kenny Brower of the Duke men's lacrosse team as the duo earned the USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player and Defenseman of the Year awards, respectively.
O'Neill is also the magazine's Preseason Attackman of the Year after leading the nation in points scored (97) a year ago. Notre Dame's Eric Dobson and Liam Entenmann were voted the Preseason Midfielder of the Year and Goalie of the Year, respectively.
Coming off one the best individual seasons in Duke lacrosse history, O'Neill returns for his final season of leading the Blue Devil offense. In 2023, O'Neill captured nearly every award possible, winning the Tewaaraton Award, the Raymond J. Enners National Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year, consensus first-team All-America honors all while leading the Blue Devils to the NCAA title game.
O'Neill followed his outstanding season as a Blue Devil with an incredible performance on the international stage with the USA Lacrosse Men's National Team. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native helped lead the U.S., to the World Lacrosse Championship gold medal, scoring five goals in the gold medal game. He was named the World Lacrosse Championship Most Valuable Player for his tournament performance.
A dual threat at attack for the Blue Devils, O'Neill is on pace to join Justin Guterding as just the second Blue Devil in history to amass 200 goals and 100 assists in his career. He currently ranks ninth on the career points list with 226 points. His 153 career goals rank eighth, while his 73 assists are 16th in program lore.
A starter in every game of his career, Brower is back to anchor the Blue Devil close defense. He finished second on the team last season in caused turnovers (22) and third among non-faceoff specialists in ground balls (39) en route to garnering All-ACC and first-team All-America honors. In the six ACC outings in 2023, Brower collected 11 ground balls and two caused turnovers while holding opponents under their scoring average in three of the six games. The first three-year captain in Duke history, Brower ranks ninth in Duke history with 54 caused turnovers and is three away from climbing into the top five on the Blue Devil career list.
In Duke's 19 games last season, the Blue Devil defense held opponents under their scoring average in 14 of them. The Blue Devils held eight foes under 10 goals and outscored teams 154-85 in first halves last season. Duke allowed just 4.47 goals per game in the first half last season.
The Blue Devils open the season Feb. 3, hosting Bellarmine at Koskinen Stadium at 12 p.m. Season tickets for Duke's nine home contests are on sale and are $72 for the year. Visit
