Blue Devils Help USA Field Hockey to Olympic Qualifying Semifinals

RANCHI, India β The USA Field Hockey women's national team is off a perfect start, going 3-0 in pool play at the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier. Former Blue Devils Leah Crouse and Jillian Wolgemuth are representing Duke on the U.S. squad on their quest to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Former Duke standout Rose Tynan also is taking part in the Olympic qualifier tournament, playing for New Zealand. Tynan and the Black Sticks went 1-2 in group action with Tynan starting all three games.
The United States opened the tournament with a massive 1-0 victory over host and sixth-ranked India. They carried the momentum forward with a 2-0 triumph against No. 19 Italy and rounded out pool play with a 1-0 victory over New Zealand.
Crouse started all three games for the United States, while Wolgemuth garnered two starts in helping the 12th-ranked United States post three consecutive shutouts. With the group win, the U.S., earns a spot in the semifinals and will take on Pool A runner-up Japan on Jan. 18 at 6 a.m. (ET).
Japan, ranked 11th in the world, enters the semifinals with a 2-0-1 record, tying No. 5 Germany, 1-1. The game Friday in Jharkhand, India will pit two stingy defenses against each other as the Japanese allowed just one goal in group play. The winner is guaranteed a spot in the 2024 Olympic Games.
Tynan and New Zealand finished third in Pool B and is eliminated from an Olympic qualifying spot. The Black Sticks will play Czhechia for a chance to play in the fifth-place match.Β
