Calhoun, Carter Accept Postseason Bowl Invitations

DURHAM – Duke redshirt seniors Jalon Calhoun and DeWayne Carter have each accepted invitations to individual postseason bowl games.

Calhoun is set to participate in the Caribe Royale Resort Hula Bowl, which is scheduled for noon on Saturday at UCF's FBC Mortgages Stadium in Orlando, Fla. Carter has accepted an invitation to the Reese's Senior Bowl, which takes place at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Ala., on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. (noon CT). The Hula Bowl will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network, while the Senior Bowl will be carried on the NFL Network.

Calhoun is the 23rd Blue Devil to be invited to the Hula Bowl. He joins Roy Hord (1957), Wray Carlton (1958), Mike McGee (1959), Tee Moorman (1960), Jack Wilson (1961), Jay Wilkinson (1963), Dick Biddle (1970), Ernie Jackson (1971), Steve Jones (1972), Lyman Smith (1977), Dennis Tabron (1981), Ben Bennett (1983), Anthony Dilweg (1988), Chris Port (1989), Carey Metts (1989), Robert Baldwin (1994), Corey Thomas (1997), Scottie Montgomery (1999), Troy Andrew (2000), Austin Parker (2019), Evan Deckers (2022), and Darius Joiner (2022).

Calhoun, a 5-11, 191-pound Greenville, S.C., native finished second on the team last season in receptions (50), receiving yards (666 yards) and receiving touchdowns (4). He concluded his Duke career ranked tied for third in program history in pass receptions (253) and fourth in receiving yards (3,026). He became just the eighth Blue Devil in program history to register 600-plus receiving yards in three seasons at Duke.

Carter is the 29th Blue Devils to earn an invitation to the Senior Bowl and joins Jamison Crowder (2014), Laken Tomlinson (2014), Jeremy Cash (2015), Ross Martin (2015), Daniel Jones (2019), and Noah Gray (2020) as invitees from the past 10 years. Jones was named the games' MVP after completing 8-of 11 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in addition to a rushing score in helping the North squad to a 34-24 victory against the South.

Carter, a 6-3, 305-pound redshirt senior from Pickerington, Ohio, tallied 41 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sack, four quarterback hurries, four pass breakups, one blocked kick and one fumble recovery for a touchdown this past season. The first three-time team captain in program history, was a key component as to why the Blue Devils relinquished just 247 points and 15 rushing touchdowns in 2023. Carter also helped the Duke defense hold 10-of-13 opponents to under 25 points, including four to under 10 points, while shutting out No. 9 Clemson, Lafayette and NC State in the second half. Carter was named a Phil Steele Publications All-America and was a first team All-ACC recipient.
