DURHAM – This past Saturday evening in Belmont, N.C., Duke women's soccer head coach
Robbie Church and his 1989 Belmont Abbey College men's soccer team were enshrined into the school's Dr. Michael P. Reidy Athletics Hall of Fame.
Belmont Abbey College honored the 1989 team along with Frank Zinke, Theresa Breslin and William Collins on the evening.
"These Crusaders' induction in the Dr. Michael P. Reidy Athletics Hall of Fame serves as recognition and reminder — not only of their outstanding athletic achievements on fields and courts of competition but also of their tremendous professional and personal accomplishments and contributions, which are attributable, in part, to the holistic formation and development of body, mind, and soul afforded all those blessed to receive a Belmont Abbey College education," said Belmont Abbey College Vice President and Director of Athletics Stephen Miss.
Over his five seasons at Belmont Abbey College, Church built the Crusaders into a national power. Church guided Belmont Abbey to 10 wins in each of his first two seasons, before winning 20 matches in 1989.
The 1989 team went 20-4 and was undefeated in both Conference Carolinas and District 26 regular season play, rising as high as No. 7 in the National polls. They also claimed the Area VIII Championship, advancing to the 12-team National Tournament Finals – the first school from North Carolina to break through qualifying since the 1966 Abbey Hall of Fame team.
Dozens of honors followed that include: Church being named National Coach of the Year in 1989), three All-Americans, an Academic All-American, six All-South, seven All-Conference and All-District performers as well as the two-time District & Conference Player of the Year and the National Tournament Most Valuable Player at goalkeeper.
The team's remarkable achievements on the field under the leadership of Church were instrumental in defining Belmont Abbey College as an elite soccer program.
Over his 37-year head coaching career, Church has amassed a record of 475-257-74 mark at six different schools. During his four seasons as the head coach with the Crusaders, Church registered a 69-35-1 ledger.
