John Danowski and former women's lacrosse standout
Katie Chrest Erbe can add National Lacrosse Hall of Fame member to their resumes as USA Lacrosse announced its National Lacrosse Hall of Fame 2023 Class on Thursday afternoon.
The 2023 inductees are: Lynn Bowers, Danowski, Chrest Erbe, Kyle Harrison, Laura Hebert, Bob Shaw, Kyle Sweeney, and Devon Wills.
Danowski is the third Blue Devil on the men's side to be inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, joining Kevin Cassese and Eugene Corrigan. Chrest Erbe is the first Blue Devil on the women's side to earn the distinction.
Chrest Erbe, a native of Hampstead, Md., recently became the first member from the Blue Devil women's lacrosse program to be enshrined into the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame earning the honor in 2022 following a storied career headlined by the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy as the nation's top player.
From 2003-06, Chrest Erbe helped Duke to a four-year ledger of 61-18 with three ACC regular season championships, one ACC Tournament title and four NCAA Tournament berths including two appearances in the NCAA Semifinals.
A two-time All-America pick, Chrest Erbe was the 2003 ACC Rookie of the Year and went on to garner ACC Player of the Year accolades in both 2005 and 2006. As a junior, she guided the Blue Devils to the first ACC Tournament crown in program history and was named the event's Most Valuable Player, after totaling five goals and three assists in wins over North Carolina and Virginia.
The first player in ACC history to garner Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and Tournament MVP honors, Erbe established the program's single-season record for total points with 96 in 2005 and graduated as the school's all-time leader in both goals (216) and points (287). She went on to help the United States to the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse world championship. She also was a member of the 2007-08 United States Elite Team.
Success has followed Danowski throughout his 50 years of collegiate and international lacrosse, culminating with three NCAA Championships at Duke and a pair of World Championships with USA Lacrosse.
Cemented as one of the top coaches in college lacrosse, Danowski has led the Duke men's lacrosse team to unprecedented success and himself to the top of the Division I men's lacrosse wins list during his tenure in Durham. Danowski was introduced as Duke's eighth head men's lacrosse coach July 21, 2006 and quickly led the Blue Devils to some of the most successful lacrosse seasons in school history and ultimately to three NCAA Championships – 2010, 2013 and 2014.
In Danowski's 17 seasons at the helm of the Blue Devils lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive 240-74 record in leading Duke to six ACC titles, 12 appearances in the NCAA semifinals, including eight straight from 2007-14, six in the NCAA title match and ultimately to the 2010, 2013 and 2014 national championships.
The 2014 NCAA crown put Danowski among a small group of nine coaches to win three national titles and among eight to capture consecutive championships. Meanwhile, Duke's run of eight straight NCAA semifinals rank as the second most of any program since 2000 with Syracuse.
In 2019, Danowski made history by becoming the first Division I men's lacrosse head coach and only the third across all three divisions to reach 400 career wins when Duke beat Furman 17-9. Entering the 2024 season, Danowski is 459-213 to lead all Division I head coaches and rank third among all men's lacrosse coaches.
Danowski took his coaching to the international level when USA Lacrosse tapped him as its next coach heading into the 2018 World Lacrosse Championship. Faced with the arduous task of putting the U.S. back on top after a loss to Canada in 2014, he guided the United States back to the top with a thrilling 8-7 victory over Canada in Israel.
Following his success with the U.S. Men's National Team in 2018, USA Lacrosse made the unprecedented decision to keep Danowski at the helm for a second term. Danowski made history in 2023, leading the United States to the Gold Medal again, becoming the first coach to win two world championships.
While his coaching record speaks for itself, Danowski was a standout player for Rutgers from 1973-76. He still holds the Scarlet Knight record for single-season assists (54) and ranks second in career assists (120). His 14 points and 9 assists remain as single-game records for Rutgers.
Inducted into the Hofstra Hall of Fame in 2022, Danowski led the Hofstra program for 21 years, from 1986 to 2006. During his tenure he compiled 192 victories and a .610 winning percentage, which both rank second all-time at Hofstra.
