DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Athletics staff members united on Tuesday, Sept. 19, for a day of impactful community service in celebration of 919 Day. Honoring the area code that defines the Triangle region, over 30 Blue Devils engaged in a series of meaningful activities across Durham.
The day began with a visit to Open Table Ministry, where Blue Devils organized and distributed essential items to support individuals facing homelessness in the community. Simultaneously, another team volunteered at SEEDS, an urban garden and kitchen classroom dedicated to instilling respect for life, the environment and one another through gardening and food-sharing activities.
In the afternoon, Duke Athletics turned its attention to the Duke Campus Farm, participating in tasks ranging from weeding and seeding to planting and composting on the one-acre regenerative farm within Duke Forest.
The day's final act of service took place at Iglesia Emanuel, a small Hispanic Presbyterian Church committed to serving the community, especially those grappling with economic challenges exacerbated by the pandemic. Here, Duke Athletics staff members collaborated to prepare bags and boxes of food, providing assistance to 700 local families.
The 919 Day of Service underscores Duke Athletics' dedication to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. This annual event presented staff and student-athletes with a unique opportunity to connect with the community and lend their support to local organizations, reinforcing Duke Athletics' mission of making a positive impact beyond sports.
