DURHAM β Former Duke field hockey standouts
Leah Crouse and
Jillian Wolgemuth have been selected to the 16-person U.S. Women's National Team roster for the 2023 Pan American Games as announced by USA Field Hockey Monday.
The team was chosen by head coach David Passmore following the conclusion of a two-match test series against Canada. The United States will travel to Santiago, Chile for the Pan American Games taking place Oct. 25-Nov. 4. Β
"This was one of the hardest selections I've had to make with spots on the roster so competitive," said Passmore. "While it is always great for a coach to have competition this also means that some athletes who have performed well have missed out simply because others were better at this time. That said, we view ourselves as one 'united' group and whatever players in a game, series or tournament represent the whole United Eagles squad."
Crouse, a standout midfielder during her time with the Blue Devils, finished her career with 18 goals and 16 assists for 52 points. She was a 2019 All-ACC second team pick, and garnered NFHCA All-Region second team honors this past season. Crouse ranks 39th in program history in career points as one of 41 Blue Devils to reach the 50-point mark. She excels in the classroom as well, garnering numerous academic awards during her career.
Wolgemuth played in 78 games with 72 starts on the backline for the Blue Devils from 2016-19. She scored three goals and added five assists for her career, earning NFHCA All-America third team honors as a senior. A two-time All-South Region selection, Wolgemuth was named to the All-ACC team in 2018 and 2019 and captained the squad in 2019.
The No. 16 United States sits in Pool A with No. 3 Argentina, No. 25 Uruguay and No. 47 Trinidad & Tobago. Pool B is made up of No. 14 Chile, No. 15 Canada, No. 29 Mexico and No. 40 Cuba. The U.S. opens play against Trinidad and Tobago Oct. 26 at 10:30 a.m., and closes pool play against Uruguay oct. 30. The placement and finals matches are Nov. 4.
The winner of the women's 2023 PAG qualifies for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The teams that come in second, third and fourth will be placed in an FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier in January 2024.
