NEWTON, Mass. – Led by sophomore
Carina Lageyre's brace and Duke women's soccer's third straight shutout on the defensive end, the Blue Devils opened ACC action Sunday at Boston College with a 2-0 victory at the Newton Soccer Complex in Newton, Mass.
Lageyre, who hails from Cooper City, Fla., posted her first two collegiate goals in the first half and helped lead the Blue Devils to their third straight victory. Duke improved to 6-2-0, 1-0-0 in ACC action, while the Eagles dropped to 3-4-2, 0-1-0.
How It Happened
• The Blue Devils started on the attack from the start and were rewarded early as sophomore
Carina Lageyre connected on her first collegiate goal at the 2:51 mark off a feed from senior
Grace Watkins and
Baleigh Bruster.
• Watkins sent a feed into the box that went off a Boston College defender and landed at Lageyre's feet, before finishing in the top left corner.
• Then at the 31:14 mark, senior
Nicky Chico drove towards the box and sent a ball to the 18-yard mark where rookie
Mia Minestrella stopped the ball and Lageyre blasted a left-footed shot that went off the right post and into the net to put Duke ahead, 2-0.
• At the 40:43 mark, sophomore
Devin Lynch crossed in a perfect ball to a streaking
Julia Saunicheva on the right side of the box. Saunicheva drove in and hit a right-footed ball that opposing goalkeeper Wiebke Willebrandt was able to get a leg on to stop.
• At the end of the first half, Duke held an 8-1 shot advantage, including four on goal.
• Neither team had a shot in the second half until Watkins' attempt went wide left in the 63rd minute.
• Watkins featured some nice footwork to get free near the baseline in the 65th minute. She crossed a perfect ball to the head of Lynch, whose header was going towards the left side of the goal, before Willebrandt used her right hand to save it.
• Boston College had its best scoring chance in the 72nd minute as Aislin Streicek rocketed a shot towards the right points, but Duke goalkeeper
Leah Freeman made a diving stop to her left to keep the Eagles off the board.
• Duke kept attacking as sophomore
Elle Piper lofted in a shot in the 85th minute that went off the crossbar.
• For the match, the Blue Devils held a 19-3 shot advantage.
