DURHAM – Duke redshirt senior wide receiver Jalon Calhounhas been selected to the preseason watch list for The Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to the most outstanding college football receiver regardless of position, by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc.
Calhoun returns for his fifth season as the Blue Devils' starting wide receiver and was named a 2023 preseason All-ACC selection by Phil Steele's College Football Preview (1st team), Athlon Sports (2nd team) and Pro Football Focus (2nd team). In 48 career games (45 starts), Calhoun has tallied 203 receptions for 2,360 yards (11.62) and 13 touchdowns.
Throughout his Duke tenure, Calhoun has recorded 43 games with two-plus receptions, including a career-high 11 catches against Wake Forest in 2022. He has added five 100-yard receiving games, including a career-high 174 yards against Wake Forest in 2022.
Last season, the 5-11, 191-pound wide receiver became the 11th Duke player to reach 2,000 career receiving yards and the first player to register 700 yards receiving in back-to-back seasons since T.J. Rahming in 2017 and 2018. Calhoun enters the 2023 season ranked fourth all-time in most games with five-plus receptions (22), fifth in career receptions, seventh in touchdown receptions of 20-plus yards, ninth in career receiving yards, tied for 10th in both career touchdown receptions and most 100-plus yard receiving games.
The Greenville, S.C., native was named a third-team All-ACC selection in 2022, as both a wide receiver and return specialist and an honorable mention All-ACC recipient as an all-purpose player. He hauled in a team-best 62 receptions for a team-high 873 yards (14.08), while finishing third with four touchdowns.
The Biletnikoff Award is named after Fred Biletnikoff, a 6-1, 190-pounder with excellent hands and deceptive speed. He caught 589 passes for 8,974 yards and 76 touchdowns during his 14-year career with the Oakland Raiders from 1965 through 1978. At the time of his retirement, Fred not only dominated the Raiders' record book for pass receptions, but also owned several significant NFL marks as well. Along with another Hall of Fame receiver, Raymond Berry, Fred held the record for having caught 40-plus passes in 10 consecutive seasons. His 70 receptions, 1,167 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns in 19 post-season games were also NFL post-season career records.
