DURHAM – Duke men's soccer midfielder
Nick Pariano has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday. Pariano, a senior captain for the Blue Devils, helped lead No. 4 Duke to an unblemished 2-0 start to the 2023 season with wins over Jacksonville (3-1) and Furman (6-0).
Pariano, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., opened his scoring ledger with a goal from the penalty spot against Jacksonville. The goal in the 80th minute proved to be the game-winner and was one of three goals Duke scored in the final 15 minutes of play against the Dolphins. Pariano is now a perfect 3-for-3 from the spot and has four game-winning goals in his career.
In Sunday's 6-0 victory over Furman, Pariano continued his form from the 2022 season, when he led the Blue Devils in assists, helping set up two of Duke's goals against the Paladins. Pariano set up the first goal of the game – a header by
Forster Ajago – with an in-swinging corner kick in the 14th minute. Pariano notched another assist in the 68th minute with a low-driven service into the box that found the feet of
Jai Bean, who put it in the back of the net for Duke's third goal of the day.
Pariano's selection marks his first of the season and second of his career. Ajago earned Honorable Mention to this week's team following his hat trick against Furman.
The Blue Devils return to Koskinen Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 31, when they take on Wofford in the final game of the season-opening three-game homestand. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the match broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
