Carter Named to Chuck Bednarik Award Preseason Watch List

DURHAM – Duke redshirt senior defensive tackle DeWayne Carterhas been selected to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, an honor presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.
This is Carter's second preseason watch list selection as he was also tabbed to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list at the beginning of the month.

Carter returns for his third consecutive season as Duke's starting defensive tackle. The three-time team captain has compiled 86 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 11.0 sacks, seven caused fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 11 quarterback pressures and seven pass breakups in 39 career games.

The Pickerington, Ohio, native has recorded two or more tackles in 19 career games, including a career-high nine tackles against Georgia Tech in 2022. He posted a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss in four contests against North Carolina (2021 & 2022), Boston College (2022) and Wake Forest (2022). Additionally, Carter enters the 2023 campaign tied for fourth in program history for caused fumbles and just 0.5 sacks shy of becoming the 17th Duke player with 11.5 career sacks.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik who was an All-American player at the University of Pennsylvania and later a multiple year All-Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame and was the last NFL player to be a full-time player on both sides of the ball.
