DURHAM – Duke redshirt senior defensive tackle DeWayne Carterhas been selected to the preseason watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, an honor presented to the top defensive player in the country by the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

Carter returns for his third consecutive season as Duke's starting defensive tackle. The three-time team captain has compiled 86 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 11.0 sacks, seven caused fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 11 quarterback pressures and seven pass breakups in 39 career games.

The Pickerington, Ohio, native has recorded two or more tackles in 19 career games, including a career-high nine tackles against Georgia Tech in 2022. He posted a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss in four contests against North Carolina (2021 & 2022), Boston College (2022) and Wake Forest (2022). Additionally, Carter enters the 2023 campaign tied for fourth in program history for caused fumbles and just 0.5 sacks shy of becoming the 17th Duke player with 11.5 career sacks.

The Football Writers Association of America has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Nagurski dominated college football, then became a star for the Chicago Bears in the 1930's. Bronislaw "Bronko" Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce finalists for the 2023 trophy on Nov. 15 and the winner will be unveiled Dec. 4 at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet in Charlotte, N.C.
