DURHAM – Over the summer, several Duke women's soccer team members had the opportunity to serve as interns with different companies to give them experience in the field prior to graduating. Below is an inside look on the student-athletes opportunities they had and what they did. Â

Intern at NBCUniversal
Job Duties:Â This summer, I had the opportunity to work in the local sales and marketing department at NBCUniversal in New York City.
My focus was on assisting the WNBC Sales and Marketing team in helping generate leads and tracking current campaigns. After these campaigns ran live, I grabbed "air checks" on a media proxy site that allowed me to go in and make sure that the segment ran and sent it to my team. I was also able to go in and grab "posts" on existing integrations, meaning, I checked to see how their impressions (viewings) were running and reported numbers back in an excel spreadsheet. In addition, I went on campaign shoots with the Digital Content Marketing Team to gather and create content for their "New York Live" integration segment that airs across multiple times slots during the week.
I had the opportunity to join sales calls with the Business Development Team with clients such as Fendi, Sugarfina, Patek Philippe, and multiple European Hotel brands. I prospected niche French companies for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This project was particularly exciting because I was able to incorporate trends that I see day to day on social media and bring on new ideas.
A tremendous benefit of an internship within NBCUniversal was that I was encouraged to meet with teams and divisions outside of the sales department. I was able to learn about NBCUniversal's NIL campaign called "NBC Sports Athlete Direct" which is a community that connects student athletes, advertisers and fans. I sat in on NIL and Big 10 football meetings, prospect athletes that could potentially be a part of this, and help give insight to what it is like being a current athlete in this new world of NIL.
My Internship at NBCUniversal has helped shape so many ideas for my future and I could not be
more grateful for this incredible experience.
On my Experience: "This summer was by far the best one yet. This was such an amazing opportunity where I not only learned more than I could ever imagine, but I met so many incredible people. One takeaway from this experience is that sometimes it is not just about the work being done, but it is also the culture of the people and company as a whole that matters most. When I started on day one, I was welcomed into a family, just as I was at Duke. This environment is definitely a career path I see myself in in the future and I am so grateful for the time I got to spend there."

CAPE (Collegiate Athlete Premedical Experience) Summer Internship at Duke University Hospital
Job Duties:Â This summer I spent six weeks shadowing different doctors from different specialties at the Duke Hospital with the CAPE Program. Each day looked a little different, from scrubbing into surgeries to meeting 30 different patients for a doctors clinic day.
On my Experience: "I am super grateful for this internship opportunity I had through the CAPE program. It is a incredible unique experience and gives you so much exposure to so many medical specialties. While the surgeries and clinic days were all captivating in their own way, one of the most valuable parts of this summer was the connections I made— whether it was the attending I was shadowing, their P.A, a resident or a duke medical student — everyone was so welcoming and insightful."

Legal Intern for the Mecklenburg County District Attorneys Office
Job Duties:Â I researched and reviewed unserved indictment cases for the felony crimes team ADAs, shadowed ADA for trial preparation, and sat in on court sessions and trials.
On my Experience:Â "I am so grateful for this opportunity to get first-hand experience in what I have been studying. Being able to see the justice system firsthand and work with/under people with such reputable knowledge in the legal world has allowed me to learn so much. I'm excited to continue to take this experience into my studies and look forward to what comes next."

CAPE (Collegiate Athlete Premedical Experience) Summer Internship at Duke University Hospital
Job Duties: I shadowed a different doctor every day of the week and was also able to scrub in on surgeries/be present in the operating room for a wide range of operations. Additionally, we also shadowed doctors during their daily rotations and during clinic hours where we were able to study different types of medicine, interact with patients, and learn a bunch.
On my Experience: "The CAPE program summer internship was by far, the coolest thing I have ever done. Seeing Doctors in action not only inspired me to continue pursuing my path in medicine, but also allowed me to observe what happens in hospitals behind the scenes. The relationships I made with the Doctors, my fellow summer interns, and hospital staff were wonderful and I will cherish each and every one of them. Overall, I am incredibly grateful and appreciative for this incredible opportunity."
