WEST ORANGE, N.J. – Duke men's golfer
Luke Sample is heading to the U.S. Amateur Championship for the second consecutive year. The rising junior earned one of the two qualifying spots at his sectional qualifying event, held at Essex County Golf Club in West Orange, N.J., with a 36-hole score of 4-under, 138. The 123rd U.S. Amateur Championship is set to be held Aug. 14-20 at Cherry Hills C.C. in Cherry Hills Village, Co.
"It was a fun day out there, and it's always a huge accomplishment to qualify for a national championship," said Sample. "I was happy with the way I gave myself opportunities from start to finish, and it was very rewarding to convert on some of them when I needed to. Can't wait to compete in Colorado!"
Sample started his day with a 1-over, 72, in the first round of qualifying, held on Monday morning. The New York, N.Y., native rolled in three birdies, while scattering two bogeys and a double-bogey throughout his first 18 holes of play. The rising junior caught fire in the second round of the day, logging eight birdies on his scorecard en route to a 5-under, 66 – good for the lowest score of the round by any player in the field. Sample started his second round on No. 10 and poured in four birdies through his first five holes. He continued his strong play once making the turn to the front nine, converting birdie putts on No. 1, No. 5 and No. 9, while just dropping one shot with a bogey on No. 4.
The 312-player U.S. Amateur field plays 36 holes of stroke play over the first two days of competition, before a cut determines the 64 match-play participants. Sample is playing in his second straight U.S. Amateur Championship. He qualified for the 2022 U.S. Amateur last year but finished three shots shy of the match play cut.
Sample is the second Blue Devil to qualify for the 123rd U.S. Amateur, joining rising junior
Kelly Chinn. Three more Duke men's golfers are still preparing to play in their qualifiers, held throughout the remainder of July.
