Duke in the WNBA – Four Blue Devils Amid WNBA Training Camp

DURHAM – The 2023 WNBA season is on the horizon as training camp got underway Sunday ahead of the league's 27th season. Four former Duke women's basketball standouts are currently taking part in training camp with their respective teams – Lexie Brown (LA Sparks), Chelsea Gray (LV Aces), Jasmine Thomas (LA Sparks) and Elizabeth Williams (Chicago Sky).
Preseason action tips off on Friday, May 5, with the regular season set to officially tip off on Friday, May 19. Teams have until 5 p.m. ET on Thursday, May 18 to finalize their respective 12-person rosters.
Brown enters her second season with Los Angeles, and sixth in the league overall. In her first season with the Sparks in 2022, Brown played in 34 games with 16 starts and averaged 7.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. She knocked down her threes at a 39.8-percent clip, which ranked ninth in the WNBA.
The 2023 campaign marks Gray's ninth season in the league and her third year with the Aces after helping lead the squad to the 2022 WNBA Championship – the first in franchise history. She put on a phenomenal display in the series-clinching Game 4, netting 20 points, five boards and six dimes en route to earning 2022 WNBA Finals MVP honors.
Gray turned in one of the most prolific playoff runs in WNBA history, averaging 21.7 points, 7.0 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game while scoring or assisting on 379 of the Aces' 860 postseason points (44.1 percent) – the most in WNBA playoff history, per ESPN Stats & Info. She also became the first player in WNBA playoff history to top 30 points and 10 assists after notching 31 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in the series-clinching victory over the Seattle Storm in the semifinals.
Beginning her 13th WNBA season in 2023, Thomas is in her first season with the Sparks, making her way to Los Angeles via a three-player trade with the Connecticut Sun. Thomas played the first five games of the 2022 season before being forced to miss the rest of the 2022 campaign with a torn ACL. During those five contests, Thomas helped lead the Sun to a 4-1 start while posting splits of 6.6 points, 2.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. She was also among the league leaders in three-point percentage to start the season, shooting at a clip of 38.5 percent.
Williams tips off year one with the Chicago Sky after signing a two-year contract with the squad during free agency. She most recently spent the 2022 campaign with the Washington Mystics, averaging 5.4 points and 3.8 rebounds off the bench in 15 minutes per game while helping lead the team to the first round of the playoffs.
