Playing in its 30th NCAA Team Championship in program history, the Blue Devils are eying their ninth appearance in the quarterfinal round and first since 2013. All-time at the national tournament, Duke holds a 50-29 ledger.
INSIDE LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
Duke enters its super-regional match with a 22-6 overall ledger, including wins in 13 of its last 15 matches. The Blue Devils have been led by the 2023 ACC Coach and Rookie of the Year in
Ramsey Smith andÂ
Pedro Rodenas (26-2), respectively. Duke also has unanimous First Team All-ACC selectionÂ
Garrett Johns (14-10) in addition to juniorÂ
Andrew Dale (15-2), sophomoreÂ
Connor Krug (14-12), sophomore
Jake Krug (10-6), and seniorÂ
Andrew Zhang (13-8), who have all reached double-digit dual wins this year. Â
The Blue Devils also have been strong in doubles play, recording 18 doubles victories, which has given them a massive advantage heading into singles action. Duke's top doubles pairing in Johns and Rodenas (17-3), who earned an at-large NCAA Doubles Championship bid, currently hold a national ranking of No. 25. In addition, the senior duo ofÂ
Michael Heller and Zhang (8-6) are ranked No. 39 heading into the NCAA Team Championship.
HISTORY WITH NO. 5 VIRGINIA
The Blue Devils and Cavaliers have faced off 98 previous times, including twice earlier this season. Duke holds a slim 52-46 edge on the all-time series, but the Cavaliers have registered five consecutive victories over the Blue Devils, including a 4-1 victory in the 2023 ACC Championship title match. Duke's last win over Virginia came on March 30, 2018, following its 4-3 victory in Durham.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia, who just claimed the 2023 ACC title for the third-straight year, is ranked No. 5 in the country after holding a 26-4 record on the year. Four Cavaliers are listed in the most recent rankings, led by All-ACC first teamer junior Chris Rodesch at No. 9. In addition, juniors Inaki Montes (No. 26) and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (No. 49), as well as graduate student Ryan Goetz (No. 87) are all ranked in the top-100. In doubles play, Montes and Goetz, who recently garnered All-ACC first team praise, rank No. 8 in the country, while Rodesch has been paired with Goetz and Bar Botzer to make the No. 29 and No. 52 doubles duo, respectively. Montes is also listed with William Woodall and the pairing come in at No. 58 in the national rankings.
Â
The Cavaliers advanced to the round of 16 after beating Navy and No. 26 Mississippi last weekend, 4-0. Virginia is currently riding an 18-match winning streak, with their last loss coming against then No. 1 ranked Ohio State at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 19. Â
UP NEXT
If the Blue Devils beat Virginia on Saturday, they will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., where the final eight teams will compete for the national championship, May 18-20. The event will be hosted by the University of Central Florida and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission at the USTA National Campus. Â
NCAA SINGLES AND DOUBLES BIDS
Johns and Rodenas have been selected to represent Duke at the 2023 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which run May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Â
The duo received at-large bids to compete in the 64-player singles field. Rodenas makes his first appearances in the singles championship while Johns makes his second straight trip to the top singles event and earned a 9-16 seed.
In addition, the twosome secured an at-large bid to the 32-team doubles championship. The trip is Johns' second in doubles as he went withÂ
Sean Sculley in 2021. The senior doubles pairing of Heller and Zhang will serve as one of the top alternate teams, should a squad pull out of the competition prior to the start.
Â
Over the last 15 years, Duke has had at least one player or one doubles team selected to compete in the NCAA Individual Championships in every year but one. The 2020 NCAA tournament was cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The two honorees are the most sent by the Blue Devils since 2015.
