DURHAM – No. 6 Duke softball set a program record with seven Blue Devils earning All-ACC recognition, as announced by the conference Wednesday afternoon.
A league-high five Blue Devils were tabbed with All-ACC first team distinction in graduate student
Deja Davis, sophomore
Ana Gold and freshmen
Cassidy Curd,
D'Auna Jennings and
Aminah Vega, while senior
Gisele Tapia and junior
Jala Wright were named to the All-ACC second team. Curd, Jennings and Vega were also selected to the All-ACC freshman team. Davis and Gold earned all-conference citations for the second time in their careers after Davis was named to the first team and Gold to the third team and all-freshman team just a year ago.
In program history, Duke has now had five players garner All-ACC freshman team accolades after the rookie trio of Curd, Jennings and Vega join
Rachel Crabtree (2018) and
Peyton St. George (2018).
Curd has been stout for the Blue Devils this season, holding a 14-1 record after 27 appearances in the circle. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native was pinned with her first loss of the year against Longwood, despite fanning a season-high 11 batters in 4.1 hitless innings. She became the first player in program history to reach 100-plus strikeouts during their initial season and sits with 126 on the year.
Davis has played in 46-of-52 games this season, making 45 starts, and has been a key part of the Blue Devils' offense. The Cerritos, Calif., native recorded the first multi-home run game of her career after crushing two long balls in back-to-back plate appearances during the regular season finale at Pittsburgh.
Gold, a product of Ballston Spa, N.Y., has continued to rewrite the Duke record book this season, tallying 18 home runs to set the school record for single-season home runs. The sophomore has seen action in 51-of-52 games this year and sits second in the conference in home runs (18), home runs per game (0.35), RBIs (53), RBIs per game (1.04) and runs per game (0.96).
Jennings, who hails from Houston, Texas, has proved her power on offense, leading the team in batting average (.464) and stolen bases (19). Jennings earned her spot in the lineup, starting in centerfield in 50-of-52 games this year. She carries a program-high 14-game hitting streak into the ACC championship on Thursday.
Tapia is batting .390 with 60 hits, 50 RBI and just six strikeouts in 154 plate appearances. A product of Long Beach, Calif., Tapia leads the NCAA in sacrifice flies with 10 on the year and recorded the first grand slam of her career during the regular season finale at Pittsburgh.
Vega has been strong for the Blue Devils at the plate, batting .377 with 15 multi-hit games on the year. The DeBary, Fla., native leads the team in triples (3) and total bases (107) and sits second behind Gold in home runs (11) and RBI (43). The starting second baseman is one of two players on the team to have competed in all 52 games so far this year, earning 51 starts.
Wright continues to lead Duke's pitching staff with 123.1 innings in the circle and set a new career high with 119 strikeouts on the year. The Charlotte, N.C., native reached 250 career strikeouts during the Blue Devils' final midweek matchup against Longwood on April 26th. The junior holds a 12-4 record after 33 appearances, including 19 starts on the season and has tossed three complete games.
The second-seeded Blue Devils open postseason play at the ACC Championship in South Bend, Ind., and will face 10th-seeded Georgia Tech on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
