DURHAM – Duke men's lacrosse junior
Brennan O'Neill has been selected the PNC Achievers Duke Student-Athlete of the Week following his nine-point outing in a 16-14 win over No. 1 Virginia Friday evening.
O'Neill scored six goals and added three assists to help lead the Blue Devils to a thrilling 16-14 victory at the top-ranked Cavaliers. His nine points against the conference foe are the most by a Blue Devil in an ACC contest since Justin Guterding had nine against Virginia in 2018.
The native of Bay Shore, N.Y., had a hand in four of Duke's eight first-half goals as the Blue Devils took an 8-6 lead into the locker room. He continued to have the hot hand in the second half, providing the assist on the winning goal and sealing the victory with the 16th tally of the night.
Ranking in the top 25 in goals, assists and points, O'Neill has scored at least five points in eight games this season and 19 times in his career. He has seven hat tricks in 2023 and 27 in his three seasons.
Through 11 games, O'Neill has a nation's-best 61 points and ranks third in points per game (5.55). He has been lethal in ACC contests throughout his career, amassing 48 goals and 23 assists for 71 points in 15 outings for a 4.73 points per game average.
For his career, O'Neill has 190 points from 133 goals and 57 assists. He is 10 points away from becoming the 15th Blue Devil to reach 200 career points. O'Neill currently ranks 23rd at Duke in career points and 13th in career goals.
Duke (10-1) took over the No. 1 spot in the polls following the win over Virginia. The Blue Devils are back on the field Saturday at No. 2 Notre Dame. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m., at Arlotta Stadium.
