FARMVILLE, Va. – No. 8 Duke softball fell to Longwood, 4-3, in the final non-conference contest of the regular season at Lancer Field on Wednesday.
The Lancers (25-16, 11-3 Big South) handed the Blue Devils (40-9, 16-5 ACC) their ninth loss of the season and snapped their 12-game winning streak after a walk-off win in the seventh inning.
Freshmen
D'Auna Jennings and
Aminah Vega each collected three hits and scored one run on the night, finishing 3-for-5 and 3-for-4, respectively.
Left-handed pitcher
Cassidy Curd was pinned with her first loss of the year, despite throwing 4.1 hitless innings and fanning a season-best 11 batters. Curd's 11 strikeouts tallied her 107th on the year and became the first freshman to reach 100 strikeouts in a single season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Gisele Tapia gave the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead after driving in Jennings, who reached on an infield single before moving up on a stolen base and groundout.
- Longwood answered in the home half using four hits to plate three runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Lauren Taylor.
- Curd entered the game in the bottom of the third, striking out the first nine batters she faced to hold off the Lancers' offense.
- The Blue Devils fought back with runs in the fifth and seventh inning to tie the game up at 3-3.
- Longwood's Peyton Coleman, pinch running for Maryanna Guy, scored the game-winning run after capitalizing on a Blue Devils' throwing error at first base.
NOTES
- Jennings extended her career-best hitting streak to 11 games after batting 3-for-5 on the night.
- Vega, Tapia and junior Julia Boyet each recorded one RBI during the contest.
- Wright made her 32nd appearance in the circle after tossing 2.0 innings against the Lancers.
