Jake Naso have been selected as the ACC Men's Lacrosse Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively. This is the third weekly honor for Helm this season and the second for Naso. Duke's draw man also was named to the USILA Team of the Week for the first time this season.
The pair was instrumental in helping the second-ranked Blue Devils post a thrilling 15-14 victory over No. 3 Virginia Saturday afternoon. The win was Duke's 18th consecutive regular season victory over the Cavaliers.
Helm, making his 13th career start for the Blue Devils, finished his afternoon with 12 saves, including seven in the fourth quarter, to seal the one-goal victory. With Duke leading by as many as five in the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers mounted a furious comeback to cut into the deficit. Helm made four saves in the first six minutes of the fourth period to hold off a surging Virginia squad.
Sporting a one-goal lead with 1:03 remaining, Helm sealed the win with a huge save on the doorstep with 10 seconds left and a second stop as time expired for the 15-14 victory. The graduate student transfer had nine saves overall in the second half and picked up three ground balls as Duke held Virginia over four goals under its season average. Helm is 11-2 overall with a .514 save percentage and has double digit saves in eight games this season.
Naso had the best game of his career against a Virginia squad this past Saturday. The junior faceoff specialist, with the help of outstanding wing play from his teammates, won 21-of-32 faceoffs against Petey LaSalla giving Duke's offense the ball. Naso entered the game with a .472 career win percentage against the Cavaliers and won .656 Saturday. Virginia specialist Petey LaSalla entered the contest winning 62.5 percent in his career against the Blue Devils. His 34.4 percent Saturday was his fifth lowest percentage when the main draw man in his Virginia career.
With the 21 victories, Naso pushed his career to 689, leaving him 11 shy of becoming the 30th player in NCAA Division I history to reach 700 career faceoff wins. He leads the ACC with a .633 win percentage at the dot this season.
Duke heads into an off weekend with an 11-2 overall record and 4-1 mark in ACC play. The second-ranked Blue Devils close their regular season home schedule April 29 against No. 13 Syracuse at 12 p.m.
