DURHAM – Duke men's lacrosse junior
Brennan O'Neill has been selected as the PNC Achievers Student-Athlete of the Week following a six-point outing in an overtime win at No. 20 Syracuse.
O'Neill, the nation's leading point scorer, tallied four goals and two assists to help the fifth-ranked Blue Devils to a thrilling 14-13 win versus the Orange in the JMA Wireless Dome Sunday evening. The road win in Syracuse was the first in program history and marks the second straight week Duke has defeated an opponent on its home field for the first time.
With Duke trailing 5-2 early in the second quarter, O'Neill fed
Andrew McAdorey to make it 5-3 and then scored his first of the evening 12 seconds later to bring Duke within one at 5-4. In the third quarter, it was O'Neill sparking Duke's 6-0 run that eventually pushed the Blue Devils into the lead. He registered two goals and an assist in the spurt.
The four goals Sunday gave him three hat tricks for the season and 23 for his career. O'Neill has 19 goals and 15 assists for a nation's-best 34 points this season. He is averaging 5.67 points per game this season to rank second in the ACC and 10th nationally.
He is one of eight players nationally to have scored a goal in 15 consecutive games, dating back to March 5, 2022. O'Neill has 53 goals and 82 points overall in that stretch.
Duke (5-1, 1-0) moved up one spot to fourth in the USILA Coaches poll following the win at Syracuse. The Blue Devils return to Koskinen for a three-game homestand, welcoming No. 7 Loyola March 10 at 7 p.m., and 18th-ranked North Carolina March 17 at 6 p.m. Air Force wraps up the March home slate, March 20 at 7 p.m.
PNC Achievers is a student honors platform that is active at nearly 20 schools and universities across PNC Bank's service area.
