DURHAM – No. 12 Duke fell to Notre Dame, 5-4, in the opening game of conference play at Duke Softball Stadium on Friday.
The Fighting Irish (11-4) handed the Blue Devils' (15-4) their fourth loss of the season and snapped their 12-game winning streak after a tight contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Notre Dame jumped out to an early lead with an RBI-single and a two-run home run to score three in the opening frame.
- Graduate student Deja Davis led off with a double to right center field before advancing to third, and was brought in on an RBI-single from junior Kelly Torres to record Duke's first run.
- Another double from Davis scored sophomore Ana Gold from second base to trim Notre Dame's edge to one in the second inning.
- The Irish kept the offense rolling and walked in their fifth run of the game after loading the bases on no outs.
- Junior Jala Wright fanned the next three batters to end the inning without further damage.
- The Blue Devils attempted a comeback late in the sixth but the effort wasn't enough to make up the difference.
NOTES
- Davis led the Blue Devils batting 2-for-3 with two RBI and recorded her sixth multi-hit game of the season.
- Davis's second double of the contest tallied her 200th career hit.
- Junior Claire Davidson was pinned with the loss after throwing for 3.2 innings and moves to a 3-2 record.
- Davidson and Wright combined for eight strikeouts and allowed five runs off six hits.
