BUIES CREEK, N.C. – No. 14 Duke softball (11-3) recorded two shutout wins against Rider and host Campbell during the first day of the Campbell Invitational.
In the opening game against Rider (0-2), junior
Claire Davidson earned her third win of the season after throwing 36 pitches in 4.0 innings of work. Davidson gave up only one hit as the Blue Devils held off the Broncs for a 4-0 win.
Junior
Jala Wright surpassed 150 career strikeouts in the nightcap against Campbell (6-5) after she fanned five to help lead Duke past the Fighting Camels, 7-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. RIDER
- The Blue Devils scored all four runs in the third inning with the rally starting after sophomore Ana Gold drove in redshirt-freshman Jada Baker and freshman Aminah Vega with a two-RBI double. Baker and Vega reached base on a walk and single, respectively, during the previous two at bats.
- Freshman D'Auna Jennings followed that up singling on a bunt to place runners on the corners.
- Jennings then picked up her fifth stolen base of the season to move herself into scoring position.
- During the ensuing at bat, senior Gisele Tapia converted on a sacrifice fly to bring home Gold and shift Jennings up 60 feet to third.
- Deja Davis kept the wheel moving by reaching base on an error, which allowed Jennings to touch home plate for the Blue Devils' fourth and final run of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. CAMPBELL
- Junior Francesca Frelick put Duke ahead early in the second game with a two-run homerun over the left field wall in the second inning.
- An RBI groundout by Tapia scored another run for Duke in the top of the third to create a 3-0 gap between the teams. Davis led-off the frame with a triple before Tapia brought her home two batters later.
- The Blue Devils added three additional runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to ultimately put the game away. Junior Sarah Goddard came in to pinch hit in the fifth and scored two of those four runs following a single to right field.
- Wright earned the win in the circle after posting five strikeouts and giving up just two hits in 6.0 innings of work. She moves to 3-2 on the season.
