IRVINE, Calif. – No. 16 Duke softball closed out the second day of the Mark Campbell Invitational with two strong wins over San Jose State and Liberty on Friday.
The Blue Devils defeated San Jose State, 11-2, in the opening game before claiming a thrilling, 8-5, victory over Liberty in extra innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS SAN JOSE STATE
- The Blue Devils came out swinging from the start, opening the game with three quick runs in the top of the first inning.
- Duke's offense stayed consistent, but it was a fourth inning push, sparked by Deja Davis' leadoff shot up the middle, that allowed the Blue Devils full control of the game.
- Kairi Rodriguez, Ana Gold and Claire Davidson each followed Davis with RBI-singles.
- In a full team effort, the Blue Devils defeated the San Jose State, 11-2, after five innings and out-hit the Spartans, 14-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS LIBERTY
- Similar to the first game, the Blue Devils' offense was explosive from the jump in their afternoon matchup with Liberty registering three hits off the first three pitches.
- The Flames battled back with a two-run homer over the left field fence and scoring a runner on a wild pitch to tie the game up at five in the bottom of the fifth.
- Both teams created opportunities in the last two innings, moving runners into scoring positions, but the game remained tied at five to force an extra inning.
- With Sarah Goddard placed on second, D'Auna Jennings led off the eighth inning with an RBI-single to put Duke back in the lead.
- Davis followed up with a hard-hit double to right center field, sending home Jennings before being brought in by Aminah Vega.
- Liberty was able to put the third out away before the Blue Devils could score again, leaving two runners stranded.
- Junior Jala Wright retired the last three batters in order to seal the 8-5 win over Liberty.
NOTES
- The Blue Devils are now 5-1 against opponents in games that have gone to extra innings.
- Freshman Cassidy Curd gets credited the win after throwing for three innings against San Jose State, striking out three and allowing only three hits.
- Wright threw for five innings of relief against Liberty, striking out nine while only allowing one run, one hit and walking one.
