CLEMSON, S.C. – Duke women's basketball stumbled in its ACC Opener, falling to Clemson, 80-64, Thursday night at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Sophomore
Taina Mair led Duke (5-4) with 19 points – 10 of which came in the final period, to go with two rebounds and two assists. Clemson improves to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in ACC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Clemson jumped out to an early lead and held a 13-7 margin at the first-quarter media timeout.
- Duke closed the quarter by scoring 11 of the frame's final 17 points to pull within one, 19-18, at the end of one.
- Reigan Richardson led four Blue Devil scorers in the second frame with five of the team's dozen points.
- The home team put up 16 points of its own in the frame, however, and held a 35-30 advantage at the break.
- Duke got points from five different players in the third, Jadyn Donovan (4) and Delaney Thomas (3) pacing the scoring efforts.
- Clemson led by as many as 14 in the period, but the Blue Devils were able to cut it to single digits late on two separate occasions. The first came on Thomas' old-fashioned three-point play (3:20) and the second on Donovan's finish inside (1:40).
- The final period was a tightly contested one as the Blue Devils looked to make a comeback while the Tigers worked to preserve their lead. The teams combined for 40 points across the 10 minutes with the home team holding the slim edge (21-19).
- Mair netted 10 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Blue Devil charge, but the game proved to be too far out of reach as Clemson was able to lock down the win.
