DURHAM - Duke men's soccer's forward, and ACC Offensive Player of the Year,Â
Forster Ajago is a 2023 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, the United Soccer Coaches (USC) and Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) announced on Wednesday.
Given to the top player in men's and women's NCAA Division I soccer, the MAC Hermann Trophy has been awarded annually since 1967. Ajago is one of 15 semifinalists, with three finalists set to be named on Wednesday, Dec. 13.Â
Ajago is the fourth Blue Devil to be named a semifinalist for the award in the last three seasons, joining
Thorleifur Ulfarsson (2021),
Shakur Mohammed (2022) and
Peter Stroud (2022). Duke's last winner of the MAC Hermann Trophy winner wasÂ
Andrew Wenger in 2011.
A native of Navrongo, Ghana, Ajago turned in one of the top goal-scoring seasons in the nation during the 2023 season, scoring 14 total goals and adding four assists for a total of 32 points. His 14 total goals is currently tied for seventh in the country, is tied for 12th-best in Duke men's soccer history and the most in a season since Ulfarsson scored 15 during the 2021 campaign. The striker started in all 18 of Duke's matches, logged three game-winning goals - tied for best on the team - and went 1-for-1 from the penalty spot.
Ajago finishes his collegiate career with 28 goals, nine assists, seven game-winning goals and 65 total points. He was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year and to the All-ACC First Team following his league-leading performances on the pitch, earned USC First Team All-South Region honors, was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week twice during the 2023 season and was tabbed at No. 28 overall in the midseason National Top 100 by TopDrawerSoccer.
The 2023 MAC Hermann Trophy winner will be announced at a press conference at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 5, 2024, followed by a dinner to celebrate all of the 2023 finalists.
