DURHAM – For the sixth year in a row, the Iron Dukes Varsity Club Giving Day set a record for overall giving thanks to the incredible generosity of Blue Devil Nation. Iron Dukes Varsity Club Giving Day, a 27-hour fundraiser in honor of Duke's 27 varsity programs, benefits Duke's student-athletes, coaches and each of Duke's varsity programs and has become the single largest fundraising event for Duke Athletics.
This year, with help from 2,175 individual donors, we raised a grand total of $2.91M … a record for Giving Day, surpassing last year's total of $2.56M.
Men's lacrosse led the sixth-annual Giving Day and became the first program in Giving Day history to raise over $1M ($1.04M), followed by baseball ($216,370), women's soccer ($182,152), fencing ($169,926) and volleyball ($165,120).
Additionally, in the second year of the BEAT YOUR BEST competition, teams were challenged to surpass their previous Giving Day record, with prize money awarded to those who did so by the highest percentages. A record-breaking fifteen programs "beat their best", led by men's basketball, spirit squad and fencing in the top three spots respectively.
The newest addition to Varsity Club Giving Day was the introduction of four hourly giving challenges. Each challenge had unique criteria and, if achieved within the specified hour, $12,000 in award funds were unlocked. Thanks to the overwhelming response from the Blue Devil faithful, all challenges were met and each varsity program that finished outside of the top three secured an additional $2,500 in bonus funds.
The awe-inspiring generosity of Duke Athletics' donors positively impacts each Duke student-athlete's experience by helping to provide academic support, nutritional services, world-class facilities, top-notch coaching, mental health services, team travel, performance-enhancing technology and so much more.
