THE OPENING TIP
- Duke women's basketball takes the West Coast this weekend as the Blue Devils gear up for their first test of the season against a ranked opponent, taking on No. 6 Stanford Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion.
- The game is set to tip off at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT live on ABC with Beth Mowins and Carolyn Peck calling the action.
- Sunday's game caps a difficult stretch of four games in eight days for the Blue Devils.
- Duke and Stanford square off on the hardwood for the sixth time overall and the first since 2012, the Cardinal holding a slim, 3-2, edge in the all-time series.
- The Blue Devils look to bounce back from Thursday's setback -- a 69-62 defeat to Davidson. Freshman Oluchi Okananwa paced Duke with 15 points -- 11 of those in the fourth quarter -- along with nine rebounds.
- Duke has seen a balanced attack on the offensive end thus far as the team features three players averaging double figures -- Reigan Richardson (12.5), Oluchi Okananwa (11.5) and Taina Mair (10.8).
- The Blue Devils have provided assists on nearly 50 percent of their field goals (49.6) with 58 dimes on 117 made buckets.
- Duke currently ranks ninth nationally in blocks per game with an average of 7.0 rejections.
ENERGIZER BUNNY – OKANANWA PROVIDES THE SPARK
- Freshman Oluchi Okananwa has been a spark plug for the Blue Devils off the bench, injecting a jolt of energy every time she steps onto the floor.
- Okananwa leads the Duke efforts on the glass with an average of 7.3 rebounds per game and currently ranks second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per contest. Her 29 total rebounds also sits at No. 4 in the ACC.
- In her collegiate debut, the Boston, Mass., product poured in 22 points and snagged 12 rebounds off the bench in a 30-point win over Richmond (11.6), becoming the first Duke freshman since 2014, and just the seventh all-time, to post a double-double in their first collegiate game.
- Okananwa grabbed six rebounds and scored five points at Columbia (11.14), including a huge three-point play to cap a 15-4 third-quarter run that shifted momentum in favor of the Blue Devils.
- In Thursday's setback against Davidson, Okananwa netted team highs in points (15) -- 11 of which came in the fourth quarter as Duke attempted a late rally -- and rebounds (9).
SUPERLATIVE SPOTLIGHT – DUKE LEADING EFFORT ON OFFENSIVE GLASS, ON THE BREAK & IN THE PAINT
- Duke has received strong production on the offensive glass this season producing 18.5 offensive rebounds per game -- No. 2 in the ACC and 21st nationally -- while tallying 17 more o-boards overall (74-57).
- The Blue Devils have parlayed those extra possessions into 67 second chance points, more than double than that of its opponents (33). Duke has held the advantage in three of its four games, including sizeable margins against Richmond (18-5) and Coastal Carolina (20-2).
- On the fastbreak, the Blue Devils hold a 42-15 edge and have limited each opponent to fewer than eight points in transition.
- Duke has also commanded the inside through the first four games of the season, outscoring its foes 150-94.
- The Blue Devils average 14 more points in the painted area per game than their opponents, 37.5 to 23.5, and have finished with double-digit margins in the three off the four games -- vs. Richmond (46-26), at Columbia (42-26), vs. Davidson (36-22).
A QUICK LOOK AT THE CARDINAL
- Standford (3-0) comes into the game fresh off an 86-32 victory over Cal Poly Thursday night. The Cardinal opened their season with an 87-40 win over Hawaii and followed that up with a resounding, 32-point triumph over No. 9 Indiana. The dub over the Hoosiers vaulted Stanford up nine spots in the Associated Press Top-25 Poll to its current ranking of No. 6.
- The Cardinal feature four double-figure scorers on the team led by Kiki Iriafen's 18.7 points and 9.3 rebounds with Nunu Agara (13.3), Cameron Brink (12.0) and Elena Bosgana (11.7) rounding out the quartet. Brink leads the efforts on the glass with 10.0 rebounds a game.
- Head coach Tara VanDerveer is in her 45th season overall and 38th with the Cardinal. She is already the winningest coach in women's college basketball history and needs just 14 victories to break Mike Krzyzewski's record to become the winningest coach in college basketball history all-time, men or women.
SERIES HISTORY
- Duke and Stanford will square off for just the sixth time overall, Sunday's game marking the first battle between the schools in over 10 seasons.
- The teams last met in the NCAA Elite Eight back on March 26, 2012 with Stanford posting a 81-69 win over the Blue Devils.
