DURHAM – Sophomore
Kyle Filipowski posted a game-high 25 points while adding eight rebounds and senior
Jeremy Roach tallied 17 points but it wasn't enough as No. 2 Duke (1-1) dropped a tightly-contested matchup, 78-73, to No. 12 Arizona on Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Arizona opened the game with two straight baskets before Mark Mitchell got Duke on the board with a layup off an Arizona turnover.
- The first media timeout saw the two teams knotted at six apiece and Duke took its first lead of the night out of the break via a floater by Mitchell.
- The Wildcats held a slight edge, 15-14, at the halfway mark of the first half and opened up a three-point lead, 19-16, by the under-eight timeout.
- A five-point possession for Duke – a three-pointer by Jared McCain and two free throws by Kyle Filipowski from an off-ball foul – tied the game at 21 each with 7:26 remaining in the opening half.
- A quick 7-2 burst by the visitors opened up their largest lead of the game, 36-30, with just over two minutes before halftime. Duke trailed by eight, 41-33, at the break following a banked-in three-pointer at the halftime horn by Arizona.
- An up-and-down start out of intermission culminated with a fast-break layup by McCain, halving Duke's deficit to just four, 48-44, at the first media timeout of the half.
- Back-to-back three-pointers by Jeremy Roach and Filipowski drew the Blue Devils within two, 52-50, with just over 14 minutes left in the game.
- Duke took its first lead of the second half, 54-52, courtesy of a tip-in by Sean Stewart. At the under-12 timeout, the two teams remained all square at 54 each.
- An extended 8-0 run gave the visitors a 60-54 advantage with 9:28 to go in the second half
- Duke issued a quick response of its own, getting a tough basket inside from Mitchell before Tyrese Proctor's triple from the left wing pulled the Blue Devils within one, 60-59, at the under-eight timeout.
- Following a Duke timeout, Roach curled off a screen before splashing home a three from the left-bench side to give Duke a 67-65 advantage at the 2:11 mark of the half.
- Arizona tied the game shortly after, before an offensive rebound by Filipowski followed by a putback layup regained the Blue Devil advantage with just over a minute remaining. The visitors converted an old-fashioned three-point play to move back in front, 70-69, with 47 seconds to go, then added free throws to push the margin to three.
- The visitors closed out the game at the free-throw line, however, locking down the five-point victory.
QUOTES
- "First of all, congrats to Arizona. They're very talented. They're gonna have a great season. They're really good, well coached, and you gotta give them credit. They're a very good team. I thought they were more aggressive in the first half, and I didn't think we played our best. Despite that, we're right there. At the end of the game, it comes down to one or two plays. I think the biggest thing for me – we didn't play together, and that's hard for me to swallow. That's not okay for us. We didn't play Duke basketball and I take full responsibility for that." -- head coach Jon Scheyer.
- "I think in the first half we kind of just let them off the hook a lot. We put ourselves in that position. We didn't deserve to win this one. It's all good – it's a learning experience and it's early, so you've got to just learn from it. Just have to play smart, value the ball, value possessions. It comes down to just one or two possessions in the game – that's just the biggest thing. But we're going to learn from it, get back to work tomorrow, and get ready for Michigan State on Tuesday." -- senior Jeremy Roach.
