DURHAM – Duke University Athletics has announced the launch of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Strategic Plan.
The comprehensive DEIB initiative for Duke Athletics was launched in June 2020 in response to Duke President
Vincent Price's remarks to campus in recognition of "Juneteenth's message of liberation of oppression." Duke's plan will operate with three main goals: embracing our diversity; expanding our diversity through hiring, retention, and education; strengthening the sense of belonging within the Duke Athletics community.
"Duke Athletics took that charge from President Price and began the ambitious task of establishing a department-specific plan to implement meaningful, lasting change centered on diversity, equity, inclusion, and — a necessary element of our plan — belonging," said Vice President and Director of Athletics
Nina King. "The DEIB Strategic Plan that follows will be the Duke Athletics Department's roadmap to becoming a beacon of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, not just within the realm of college athletics, but for all organizations that share such lofty but essential values."
The department's DEIB task force was chaired by
Michael Howard, Managing Director of Recreation Facilities, and
Heather Ryan, Deputy Director of Athletics/Student-Athlete Experience/Senior Woman Administrator, leading a committee comprised of student-athletes, coaches, and staff. The DEIB Advisory Committee has been established to monitor the progress and hold department leadership accountable to implement the DEIB Strategic Plan.
The plan's mission statement: "Duke Athletics is committed to cultivating and promoting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. Our collective success within and beyond the competitive arena depends on each community member being and feeling welcomed, respected, and valued. Through continuous education, reflection, humility, and accountability, we strive to develop leaders who embody these ideals."
