SETTING THE STAGE
- Both the men and women are set to face off against Boston College, Brandeis, Brown, MIT and Haverford Sunday, beginning at 9 am in the Johnson Athletic Center.
- Sunday marks the second time this season Duke will fence against Haverford and the first ACC opponent this winter in Boston College.
- Duke closed out its second weekend of competition with eight combined team victories at the Philadelphia Invitational.
- The seventh-ranked Duke men went 4-1 and captured wins over NJIT (19-8), Lafayette (23-4), Johns Hopkins (16-11) and No. 8 Penn (14-13).
- The 10th-ranked women also posted a 4-1 showing with victories against NJIT (23-4), Lafayette (27-0), Johns Hopkins (23-4) and NYU (18-9).
- The men defeated No. 8 Penn Saturday after falling to the Quakers last weekend at the Penn State Duals.
- Epeeist Sarah Lurye led the way for the entire team with a 13-1 showing while men's saberist Lukas Dannull went 12-3. Hava Stone (saber) added 12 wins on the women's side while Maxwell Greenbaum (saber), Christina Ferrari (foil), Skylar Knight (foil) and Zsofia Walter (saber) all captured 10 victories to round out the double-figure wins.
- Through two meets of the regular season, the women's team is 8-3 overall while the men are 6-4. Both the women's foil and saber squads have played to a 9-2 ledger.
- Individually, Walter leads the women's contingent with a 23-6 overall record, followed by freshman Kunling Tong with 22 wins.
- On the men's side, Dannull is 21-5 through two meets, followed by Stephen Kim (saber) and David Tierney (foil) with 16.
- The fencing team, in partnership with the Duke Cancer Institute, announced the Fence for the Fight campaign will relaunch for the 2023 season in memoriam of Elizabeth Beguinet. Elizabeth, Director of Administration and Recruiting for the Duke fencing program, passed away December 17 after a long fight with breast cancer.
- Please support both Elizabeth and Duke fencing by partnering with us and the Duke Cancer Institute by making a pledge to fight breast cancer. With your support, the money raised will go towards cancer research, care of patients and a room dedicated in the Duke Cancer Center in honor of Elizabeth. More information
- Duke will have a week off competition before hosting the annual Duke Meet Feb. 11-12 in Card Gymnasium.
