DURHAM – The Duke fencing team is set for its third weekend of the regular season Sunday at the Eric Sollee Invitational in Cambridge, Mass.
SETTING THE STAGE
Both the men and women are set to face off against Boston College, Brandeis, Brown, MIT and Haverford Sunday, beginning at 9 am in the Johnson Athletic Center.
Sunday marks the second time this season Duke will fence against Haverford and the first ACC opponent this winter in Boston College.
LAST TIME OUT
Duke closed out its second weekend of competition with eight combined team victories at the Philadelphia Invitational.
The seventh-ranked Duke men went 4-1 and captured wins over NJIT (19-8), Lafayette (23-4), Johns Hopkins (16-11) and No. 8 Penn (14-13).
The 10th-ranked women also posted a 4-1 showing with victories against NJIT (23-4), Lafayette (27-0), Johns Hopkins (23-4) and NYU (18-9).
The men defeated No. 8 Penn Saturday after falling to the Quakers last weekend at the Penn State Duals.
Through two meets of the regular season, the women's team is 8-3 overall while the men are 6-4. Both the women's foil and saber squads have played to a 9-2 ledger.
Individually, Walter leads the women's contingent with a 23-6 overall record, followed by freshman Kunling Tongwith 22 wins.
On the men's side, Dannull is 21-5 through two meets, followed by Stephen Kim(saber) and David Tierney(foil) with 16.
FENCE FOR THE FIGHT
The fencing team, in partnership with the Duke Cancer Institute, announced the Fence for the Fight campaign will relaunch for the 2023 season in memoriam of Elizabeth Beguinet. Elizabeth, Director of Administration and Recruiting for the Duke fencing program, passed away December 17 after a long fight with breast cancer.
