DURHAM – Following a strong 3-0 victory over Michigan on Thursday evening, Duke (3-0-0) has been ranked No. 7 in the country by United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced. The top-10 ranking is the best of the 2022 season so far for the Blue Devils, and the highest ranking for Duke since being No. 3 in the country last October.
Duke used a strong offensive effort from all over the field to secure its third consecutive victory of the season and to move up 10 spots in the poll. Freshman
Axel Gudbjornsson scored his second goal in as many games to open the Blue Devils' ledger in the first half off a header.
Peter Stroud scored his first goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute and
Luke Thomas also picked up his first goal of the year just five minutes later to cap off Duke's scoring.
Eliot Hamill secured his third shutout in as many games between the posts, making a season-high four saves to keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard.
Duke also moved up in TopDrawerSoccer's and College Soccer News' weekly polls, ranking No. 3 and No. 4 in the country respectively.
Lopez Named to Team of the Week by College Soccer News
Following a stout effort on defense against Michigan, junior
Antino Lopez was named to the College Soccer News' Team of the Week for the week of Sept. 5.
It's the first Team of the Week recognition for Lopez and comes on the heels of yet another Duke shutout. The defender played all 90 minutes against the Wolverines and has played all but six available minutes so far during the 2022 campaign. The three consecutive shutouts by the Blue Devils' defense makes 2022 the second year in a row that the feat has been accomplished and the third time in the last four seasons.
No. 7 Duke returns to action on Saturday night when it travels to No. 10 Louisville to begin ACC play. First touch for the top-10 clash between the Blue Devils and Cardinals is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium, with the game being streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
