DURHAM – Duke held its first fully-padded practice of the 2022 season Tuesday morning at the Brooks Practice Facility.
After their sixth practice of the year, junior linebacker Dorian Mausi and sophomore wide receiver Sahmir Hagans addressed the media.
"Everybody offers their own skill set to the group," Hagans said when asked about the depth of the wide receiver room. "Some guys are tall; some are quicker than others but it all ties in together. We all help each other. We can take something from one receiver and apply it to our game and vice versa."
During the offseason, Duke added two defensive back transfers in Datrone Young and Darius Joiner. Hagans added his thoughts on how the two veteran players are pushing him and the other wide receivers to get better daily.
"I see Speedy (Datrone Young) a lot during practice. He's really talented, very patient and has a lot of experience. He's played a lot of ball where he came from and that's pushing me to be better. With me being younger, I like to see him do matchups and different types of coverages to see how he plays it. I like to give him work the same way he does me. Darius (Joiner) can play too. He's been out there making plays all throughout camp."
Mausi spoke on the young linebacking corps and how they are adjusting to the college game.
"They're doing well. We're all in this together. One of the first times I sat down with the guys I said it's kind of like we're freshmen all over again. And by that, I mean we're all going to be learning the new schemes together. We still have things to overcome as a group, but we don't want them to feel like they're by themselves. They just need to experience playing the game at this level, which they know how to do because they're doing it well. There is just a sense of competition in the linebacker room right now and it's a competition every day. Nothing is safe. Can't go out there like your job is safe if it's not."
Duke's 2022 season opener is Friday, Sept. 2 against Temple. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium and will be broadcast on ACC Network.
