DURHAM – Duke Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Shawn Wilbourn announced the hiring of former Blue Devils' assistant and volunteer assistant coach
Matt LoPiccolo as the program's Director of Operations.
"It is my pleasure to welcome Matt back to our team as the first Director of Operations in program history," Wilborn said. "Matt brings a wealth of knowledge related to the sports of cross country and track & field having served as the director of both sports at SUNY Oneonta, and as both an assistant coach and a volunteer coach for us during the 2013-2017 seasons. The addition of this position shows the commitment to success our administration and staff have for Duke cross country and track & field."
LoPiccolo returns to Duke after most recently serving as the Race Operations Manager with the Bull City Running Company from Nov. 2021- August 2022. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant coach and facility manager with Zap Endurance from May 2017- Nov. 2021, where he applied his vast coaching experience and knowledge in working with athletes of all ages and abilities from around the country.
"Throughout my life, I've always tried to make the most of opportunities when presented to me," LoPiccolo said. "To have the chance to work in Intercollegiate Athletics once again, let alone at Duke University, is truly a dream come true. Thanks certainly goes to
Shawn Wilbourn for believing that I can contribute to an already phenomenal program. My family and I are beyond delighted to be back in Duke Blue."
In his first stint with the Blue Devils, LoPiccolo helped the Duke sprinters see one of the most successful seasons in program history during the 2015 campaign. The women's 4x400m relay and men's distance medley relay units earned USTFCCCA All-America First Team honors after finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Prior to joining the Duke coaching staff, LoPiccolo served as head coach of the track and field program at SUNY Oneonta from 2000-2013. Under his direction, his teams earned 41 Division III All-America awards, produced five National Champions, while qualifying 114 individuals for the SUNYAC Track & Field Championship meet and 23 individuals for the ECAC Track & Field Championship meet. In 2012, LoPiccolo coached the fastest 200-meter runner in school history, Sean Bernstein, to two consecutive NCAA Division III individual national championships.
Academically, LoPiccolo's student-athletes produced 22 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Individual Award winners, with the 2006 season featuring an NCCA Woman of the Year Finalist, NCAA Top VIII Award Finalist, and a USTFCCCA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Student-Athlete of the Year.
LoPiccolo earned a B.A. in mathematics and an M.A. in Administration and Leadership, both from Plattsburgh State University of New York. In 1998, he received All-America honors while competing for Plattsburgh in the 800m.
