Friday's game will mark the head coaching debuts for both Mike Elko and Temple's Stan Drayton. Research indicates that has happened only three other times since 1982 -- Cal's Joe Kapp met Colorado's Bill McCartney in 1982, Rice's Mike Bloomgren met Prairie View's Eric Dooley in 2018 and Bowling Green's Scot Loeffler met Morgan State's Tyrone Wheatley in 2019.
The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 1-0 after a 56-27 victory in the 2018 Walk-On's Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. Quarterback Daniel Jones threw for 423 yards and five touchdowns in the game, while wide receiver T.J. Rahming caught 12 passes for 240 yards and two scores.

Duke returns 13 starters (six on offense, five on defensive and two on special teams) from a year ago, including wide receiver Jalon Calhounand linebacker Shaka Heyward. Calhoun finished second on the team in receptions (56) and receiving yards (718) and enters 2022 riding a 19-game streak with two-plus receptions. Heyward, a 2021 Third Team All-ACC selection, led the team and ranked fifth in the ACC with 98 tackles last season. Heading into 2022, he has tallied four-plus tackles in 28 straight contests and is one of two returning starters with 2,400-plus career snaps (Jacob Monk; 2,411).
Six Blue Devils have been named to watch lists heading into the 2022 season. Heyward highlights the group after being tabbed to the Lott IMPACT Trophy, Bednarik Award and Reese's Senior Bowl watch lists.
The Blue Devils hold an all-time record of 63-43-3 in season-opening games. Duke is 7-3 over its last 10 season-openers, but have dropped the last three.
DUKE CAPTAINS
Elected by their teammates, three returning lettermen will serve as team captains for the 2022 campaign: DT DeWayne Carter, LB Shaka Heywardand OL Jacob Monk.Carter is a two-time team captain, becoming the first to achieve that honor since Daniel Jones in 2017 and 2018.
AN ANNIVERSARY TO LIVE UP TO
This season marks the 70th anniversary of Duke's 1952 team that claimed the Southern Conference Championship following an 8-2 overall record and 5-0 mark in conference play. The Bill Murray coached Blue Devils finished 16th and 18th in the Associated Press and United Press International final national rankings, respectively. Duke started the season 6-0, earning wins over No. 11 Tennessee and No. 9 Virginia. Nine Blue Devils received All-ACC honors, including Ed Meadows, who was Duke's lone All-American that season. Murray earned Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors, while team captain Louis Tepe was awarded the Southern Conference Jacobs Blocking Trophy.
THE ELKO ERA BEGINS
The 1942-43 academic year was the last time Duke had a new football coach and a new basketball coach at the same time. Mike Elko was named the 22nd head football coach on December 10, 2021, while Jon Scheyerwas named the 20th head coach of the basketball program on June 4, 2021 but did not take over the reins until Mike Krzyzewski's retirement following the 2021-22 season.
NON-CONFERENCE WINS
Over the last 10 years, Duke holds a 28-8 (.778) regular season and 31-11 (.738) overall record against non-conference opponents. In its last 25 non-conference games, Duke is 18-7.
OFFENSIVE LINE STABILITY
One of Duke's most veteran groups is its offensive line. Of the 16-man unit, eight have played in 24 career games. The leader of the unit is team captain Jacob Monk, who enters 2022 as one of two returning starters with 2,400-plus career snaps (Shaka Heyward: 2,527). Monk has seen action at guard and tackle during his Blue Devil tenure and will take on the role of Duke's starting center in 2022.Â
QB1 NAMED
Duke charted sophomore Riley Leonard its starting quarterback, marking the fifth-straight season with a different quarterback for the Blue Devils AÂ native of Fairhope, Ala., Leonard saw action in seven games during his rookie season, making one start against Virginia Tech. In 164 career snaps, he has completed 37-of-62 (.597) pass attempts for 381 yards with one touchdown and one interception while rushing 47 times for 173 yards (3.68) and two scores.
RECEIVING CORPS
The receiving unit returns 49 percent of its receptions from a year ago, including 56 catches from senior wide receiver Jalon Calhoun. Of the nine returning players who caught a pass in 2021, six registered at least 100-plus receiving yards. Returning tight ends Nicky Dalmolin and Cole Finney, as well as running back Jordan Waters, are factored into that number as well.Â
Senior wide receiver Eli Pancoljoins Calhoun as the only other returner with 200-plus receiving yards in 2021 (17; 233).
MR. VERSATILITY
Sophomore quarterback Jordan Moore has shown his ability to be a versatile athlete. During fall camp, Moore took reps with the quarterbacks but also was on the receiving end of throws as a wideout. in addition, Moore finished second on the team in rushing yards a year ago.
In 10 career games, Moore has completed nine-of-19 (.474) pass attempts for 95 yards with one touchdown and added 44 rushes for 221 yards (5.02) and three touchdowns. He recorded career-highs last season of six pass completions, 12 pass attempts, 63 passing yards, 17 rushing attempts and 113 rushing yards versus Virginia Tech. In addition, he tallied a career-long 36-yard pass completion to tight end Cole Finney against Northwestern and accumulated a career-long 40-yard jaunt against the Hokies.
VETERAN LEADERS
Defensive tackle DeWayne Carterand linebacker Shaka Heyward both bring a wealth of knowledge with them and over 25 career games played and 1,200 career snaps. Carter leads a youthful defensive line, while Heyward anchors a strong linebacker unit for the third consecutive season.
HEYWARD NOTABLES
Redshirt senior linebacker Shaka Heyward has been named a 2022 preseason All-ACC selection by Phil Steele (2nd team) and Athlon Sports (3rd team). He has also been tabbed to the Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List and named a candidate for the Lott IMPACT Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award. In 39 career games (29 starts), Heyward has compiled 246 tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries, one pass breakup, and 11 quarterback pressures.
In 2,527 career snaps, he has eight double-digit tackle games, including a career-high 16 stops against North Carolina A&T in 2021, and has 27 games with five-plus tackles. Heading into 2022, he has tallied four-plus tackles in 28 straight contests.
TAKING DOWN THE QUARTERBACK
Duke returns four of its top five sack leaders from a year ago. Redshirt juniors R.J. Obenand DeWayne Carter compiled 5.0 and 4.5 sacks, respectively last season to lead the team. Redshirt senior Shaka Heyward chipped in with 3.0, while junior Aeneas Peebles tallied 2.0.Â
ADDING EXPERIENCE TO THE DEFENSE
Duke added four veteran defensive players to its roster during the offseason. Along with the additions of Darius Joinerand Datrone Youngto Duke's defensive secondary, it has also welcomed linebacker Cam Dillon(Colombia) and defensive end Anthony Nelson (Harvard) to squad for the 2022 season. Dillon was a three-year lettermen at Columbia and a 2021 Second Team All-Ivy League selection. Nelson, who also spent time in the Ivy League at Harvard, compiled 56 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks, one pass breakups, six quarterback pressures and one blocked field goal in 24 career games.
SNAP IT BACK
Graduate student Evan Deckers, who joined the Blue Devils during the spring after an impressive career at Massachusetts, was named to the 2022 Pro Football Network Preseason All-America team earlier this fall. The 2022 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list honoree, lettered four years at Massachusetts, playing in 40 career games. Deckers earned Second Team All-Independent honors by Phil Steele just a season ago. The Avon, Conn., native helped the Minutemen kickers convert 27-of-36 field goals and 102-of-106 PATs during his tenure. He also assisted the punting unit on 226 punts for 9,290 yards (41.11), including 57 punts downed inside the 20.
