DURHAM – Head coach
Marissa Young has announced the addition of
Kristiana Watson as a transfer student for the 2023 season.
"Kristiana has had success in big moments and is going to add experience and power to our lineup," said Young. "She values our culture and the family environment we have created at Duke. I look forward to seeing her become the best version of herself as a Blue Devil!"
Watson joins the program after completing her first college season as a redshirt freshman at Arizona State. Watson will have three years of eligibility remaining.
A native of Tuscon, Ariz., Watson played in 31 games for the Sun Devils, making 17 starts. Watson hit .255 with five home runs and 17 RBI, while also drawing six walks and splitting the season between first base and designated player.
Her standout moment of her freshman campaign came against the Blue Devils, hitting the walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Sun Devils an 8-7 win in the fourth game of the season.
Continuing her flair for the dramatic, Watson hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to complete Arizona State's comeback against Cal State Fullerton, with a 5-2 win in the NCAA Tempe Regional. Watson and the Sun Devils would reach the Super Regional, before falling to Northwestern in three games.
Watson also brings a strong high school pedigree after being named a two-time
MaxPreps All-American, the 4A Offensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Arizona Player of the Year in her time at Amphitheater High School in Tuscon.
Watson is set to join incoming freshmen
Cassidy Curd,
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon,
D'Auna Jennings,
Kairi Rodriguez and
Aminah Vega as newcomers on the Blue Devils roster in 2023.
