DURHAM – Duke held its second scrimmage of preseason fall camp Sunday night at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The Blue Devils ran over 100 plays in addition to working on special teams and two-minute drills. After their 16th practice of the year, sophomore defensive back Brandon Johnson and senior wide receiver Eli Pancoladdressed the media.
Johnson saw significant action last season as a rookie, finishing with 17 tackles and one fumble recovery.
"One of the goals we have in the safeties room is to grow and to help lead this defense," Johnson said when asked about his positional group. "I think camp has been good. We started off strong and are continuing to build toward the end goal that we have not only in our position room, but as an entire defensive unit. Coach (Lyle) Hemphill preaches every day to play hard, but also demonstrate good coverage. No matter what the play call is, whether it is press or zone, we maintain that good technique on the outside."
Pancol has played over 1,000 career snaps at wide receiver and returns for his senior season after recording 17 receptions for 233 yards with one touchdown just a year ago.
"I give one-hundred percent of the credit to my teammates," Pancol commented when asked about his career growth. "They push me every single day and we are always competing for reps at the wideout position. Nobody in that group takes a play off. On the opposite side of the ball, they are pushing me every play to go up and make the catch. I also give credit to our coaches and the weight staff who have continued to develop me further."
Duke continues its fall camp schedule in preparation for its season opener on Friday, Sept. 2 against Temple. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium and will be broadcast on ACC Network.
