DURHAM – Behind a pair of goals from junior
Peter Stroud, the No. 12 Duke men's soccer team defeated High Point, 3-0, in an exhibition on Tuesday night at Koskinen Stadium.
Â
Stroud potted two goals in less than six minutes to lead the scoring for Duke, while senior
Scotty Taylor added another to seal a victory. Graduate student
Eliot Hamill and sophomore
Grant Farley spent 45 minutes in net each, recording two saves apiece to secure the shutout.
Â
The two opponents traded blows throughout the first half, with Duke getting the first strong chance of the game after a High Point red card in the 22nd minute.
Amir Daley nearly had the first tally of the day, when a header almost snuck in the bottom right corner, but the Panthers goalkeeper made a diving save to his left.
Â
Hamill would make a brilliant save of his own later in the half, diving to his left to stop a blast from High Point's Larson Rula and keep the game knotted at 0-0.
Â
After a scoreless first half, the Blue Devils increased the pressure and forced the Panthers into several mistakes. Stroud was the first to break the deadlock, finding space outside the box before delivering a ground ball into the lower left corner for a 1-0 lead.
Â
Just six minutes later, Stroud pounced on a defensive mishap by the Panthers in their own end and blasted a shot by the goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead. The goal gave Stroud his first two-goal game of his collegiate career.
Â
Not to be outdone, Taylor took advantage of another High Point mistake to extend the lead further. The Millburn, N.J., native anticipated the passing between the goalkeeper and defense and caught the goalkeeper with the ball on his feet. Taylor blocked the clearing attempt into the net and put the game out of reach for the Blue Devils.
Â
The Blue Devils will wrap up the exhibition slate on Friday, hosting Longwood at 7 p.m., in Koskinen Stadium. The game is the final tune-up before the season-opener on Aug. 26 against San Diego.
