DURHAM – Duke football continued its preparations for the 2022 season on Tuesday with its 12th official practice at the Brooks Practice Facility.
The Blue Devils worked on team, individual, and situational drills and at the conclusion of practice, head coach Mike Elkospoke to members of the media.
"For the first scrimmage I think it was clean," Elko said when asked about Sunday's scrimmage. "We didn't have a lot of penalties or turnovers so from that standpoint it was good. I thought it was good we had some efficiency running the football and our offensive line did a really good job. We still need to get a little bit better at executing our passing game. I think with every quarterback that is a big point of emphasis as we head into scrimmage two."
With the coaching transition during the offseason, the staff has quickly implemented new schemes and plays but that doesn't come without some challenges.
"Yeah, I think it is consistency," Elko added. "We have certainly seen flash plays right, but there is a consistency to route running, execution, catching the football and putting the football where we need it to be. That is the area that we have got to go. Have we seen it? Yeah, we've seen flashes and we certainly have guys that have the ability to make big explosive plays, we just have to make sure we're consistent play in and play out. I think that is probably the biggest gap that we have got to close this week."
Duke's 2022 season opener is Friday, Sept. 2 against Temple. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium and will be broadcast on ACC Network.
