DURHAM – Duke redshirt junior punter Porter Wilson has been named to the Ray Guy Award watch list, awarded to the top collegiate punter each year.
Â
Wilson was one of just three punters in the ACC last season with at least 15 punts of 50-plus yards and 20 punts downed inside the 20.
Â
A native of Fairlawn, Ohio, Wilson started in all 12 games in 2021, punting 61 times for 2,732 yards (44.79). He ranked third in the league in total yardage and punting average and had 22 kicks downed inside the opponent 20-yard line to just three touchbacks.
Â
In addition, Wilson finished the season with 17 punts of 50-plus yards to tie for the fourth-highest total in the ACC. He registered a season-long 69-yard punt against North Carolina A&T. Wilson also was just one of two punters to rank among the league's top 10 in punting average with 60-plus boots against three-or-less touchbacks.
Â
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
