DURHAM – Head coach
John Kerr has announced the addition of goalkeeper
Peter Wentzel, who is joining the team as a graduate transfer for the 2022 season.
Â
A native of Ettlingen, Germany, Wentzel comes to Duke following a successful undergraduate career at Elon, where he spent the past four years, with one redshirt season.
Â
"Peter Wentzel is a MMS graduate student who comes to us after being the starting goalkeeper at Elon last season," said Kerr. "He has great experience from Elon as well as the youth system in Germany. He is a very good shot stopper and has great presence in the 18-yard box. He is very keen and ambitious, and we look forward to having him join the Duke soccer family!"
Â
During his tenure at Elon, Wentzel rose up the depth chart to take the starting goalkeeper position this past season. Wentzel played in 16 games, making 15 starts and going 8-5-1 with a 1.11 goals-against average and a .750 save percentage. He made 51 saves on the year, tallying six solo clean sheets and combined shutout in an additional start.
Â
In his career at Elon, Wentzel is 11-10-1 with eight shutouts and 80 saves, recording a goals-against average of 1.49.
Â
Wentzel had a particularly prolific showing in the CAA Championship opening round, making six saves to stifle Northeastern en route to a 1-0 win to advance to the CAA Championship final.
