DURHAM – Following a team vote this week, the trio of
Emmy Duerr,
Ruthie Jones and
Sophie Jones have been tabbed Duke women's soccer team captains for the 2022 campaign, as announced by head coach
Robbie Church on Saturday.
"I felt our leadership group this spring and going into this summer has really been phenomenal," said Church. "From that leadership group, we have voted our three captains in Emmy, Ruthie and Sophie. We are very, very proud of them and I think they will do a fantastic job of being leaders along with the other seniors and graduate players we have in our program. It is important as we get ready to start this journey to have good, strong leadership in all areas of our program. This group will provide that going into the 2022 season."
Over three seasons with the Blue Devils, Duerr has seen action in 47 contests, while making four starts and appearing in 1,227 minutes. Duerr, a native of Cary, N.C., owns four goals and two assists for 10 points during her Duke career. She is a two-time ACC Honor Roll selection and was honored with the ACC Top Six for Service Award in 2020, which is presented annually to members of each ACC institution who demonstrates dedication to community service and outreach programs.
Ruthie Jones has been a mainstay in goal for Duke the last two seasons starting 41 straight matches, accumulating 19 shutouts, 104 saves and a 0.62 goals-against average. She has helped lead the Blue Devils to 27 victories over that span. Jones, who hails from Charlotte, N.C., was a 2021 First Team All-ACC and United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Second Team honoree a year ago, after totaling a 0.59 goals-against average, nine shutouts while allowing only 12 goals in 21 matches.
A product of Menlo Park, Calif.,
Sophie Jones has started all 52 contests over her Blue Devil career, while notching three goals and five assists for 11 points. She is a two-time All-ACC selection, while earning 2020-21 United Soccer Coaches Association All-America accolades as a sophomore. One of the most dynamic midfielders in the game, Jones recently competed with the U.S. U-23 Women's Youth National Team at the Thorns Preseason Tournament in March of 2022.
Behind the leadership of Duerr and the Jones duo, the Blue Devils will look to carry over the momentum from a successful 2021 campaign that saw them rack up 16 victories, make a trip to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 5 nationally.
The Blue Devils get the 35th season in program history rolling with a pair of exhibition matches, traveling to Georgia on Monday, Aug. 9, before hosting South Carolina on Friday, Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. Duke's 2022 regular season gets underway Aug. 18 as the Blue Devils make the trip to Greenville, N.C., to face East Carolina at 7 p.m. The first home contest will be Sunday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m., versus UNC Greensboro.
