DURHAM – Juniors
Garrett Johns and
Andrew Zhang both represented Duke on the men's tennis All-ACC team, the league announced Thursday.
Johns was tabbed to the second team, while Zhang was a third team selection. The all-league honor was the second acknowledgement for both players as they each earned distinction last season.
Johns, who ranks No. 49 nationally, served as Duke's No. 1 singles player all year, and represented Duke during the 2022 NCAA Singles Championship last month. He finished the season with a 19-10 overall singles mark, including a 13-7 record in dual action. On the year, Johns held an 8-8 mark against nationally ranked opponents, including a match-clinching victory over No. 22 Brian Cernoch of North Carolina. In total, he earned five match-clinching wins, which were second-most on the team.
Zhang compiled season records of 22-9 in singles, including a dual mark of 13-4, and 16-12 in doubles this past season. His 22 overall singles wins on the year were first on the team, while his 13 dual victories placed him second. Zhang finished third on team with two match-clinching victories, including one against No. 42 Memphis in the NCAA First Round. He added two wins over nationally ranked opponents and won the ITA Carolina Regional Championship singles title this fall.
In doubles action, Johns played with four different doubles players and finished with a winning record on each of the three courts (6-6 on court one, 4-2 on court two and 2-0 on court three). Zhang tied for the team lead in overall wins with 16 after playing with six different doubles partners.
The top individual winners in the league this year were Virginia's Inaki Montes, who was the ACC's Player of the Year, and NC State's Luca Staeheli as Freshman of the Year. Virginia's Andres Pedroso was named the ACC Coach of the Year.
