DURHAM – Duke student-athletes
Tess Boade and
Alexis Joseph were named recipients of the Heidrick Family Leadership Post Graduate Scholarships, the Blue Devil Athletic Department announced this week.
The Heidrick Family Leadership Post Graduate Scholarships were established through a generous gift by Bob Heidrick and his family. The recipients are chosen not only for what they have contributed to the leadership community within Duke Athletics but also by who they are as people, how they have grown in the area of leadership and how they have used their leadership development to enhance the community during their undergraduate career at Duke University.
The selection is viewed as an investment in the individual rather than on the athletic accomplishment of the individual. It is the investment in the excellence of his/her character, in the qualities of leadership possessed by the individual, commitment to others and the potential for service through outstanding leadership in the future.
Two Scholarships will be awarded in the amount $10,000 each to two graduating Duke student-athletes. The funds are to be applied toward the continuation of their academic endeavors at the graduate or professional school level. Funds must be used within three years of each recipient's graduation from Duke University.
A native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Boade wrapped up her Duke women's soccer career ranked fourth in program history in matches played (93) and eighth in game-winning goals (10). She provided clutch scoring throughout her graduate campaign this fall, highlighted by game-winners against No. 1 Florida State and No. 2 North Carolina. The first-team All-ACC and second-team All-Atlantic Region selection set career highs in goals (8), assists (5) and points (21) while helping lead Duke to a No. 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament and an appearance in the quarterfinal round. Boade made her professional debut in March with the North Carolina Courage of the National Women's Soccer League.
A two-time team captain, Boade was very active off the field with LEAD, was an ACTION Mentor, member of the CAPE Program and is currently in graduate school at the Duke School of Medicine pursuing a Master of Management in Clinical Informatics.
Joseph, a product of Philadelphia, Pa., appeared in 32 contests over the last four years with the women's lacrosse program. The defender is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection and helped lead the Blue Devils to 44 wins over the last four years. This past December, Joseph was honored with the Samuel DuBois Cook Society Undergraduate Student Award. She highly involved in the community and is co-president of Duke's United Black Athletes Chapter. Joseph teamed with GROWTHNC to create a free lacrosse clinic for young Black and Brown girls in Durham.
A recent Duke graduate, Joseph plans on coaching lacrosse at Howard University, before attending architecture school.
