DURHAM – Softball graduate student
Jameson Kavel has been named a first team CoSIDA Academic All-American, as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday.
Kavel becomes the first CoSIDA Academic All-American in program history, after previously being tabbed to the All-District team for three consecutive years, including this season. The Blue Devils have had at least one All-District honoree in each of the last four years.
A native of Duluth, Ga., Kavel had a huge season that culminated in being named an NFCA All-American for the first time, by being tabbed to the third team. Kavel hit .379 with 17 home runs, 49 RBI, 16 doubles and 15 stolen bases, while starting all 55 games at shortstop. Her efforts also earned her All-ACC first team and NFCA All-South Region second team honors.
Kavel set new Duke single season records in home runs and doubles, as well as hits (66) and runs scored (59). The shortstop leaves Duke as the program's all-time leader in games played, games started, at-bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, walks and stolen bases.
Kavel was also one of just two players nationally to hold a batting average of .370 or higher, hit at least 15 home runs and steal 15 bases, joining fellow 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-American Addison Barnard of Wichita State. Behind her play, Duke reached its first NCAA Super Regional in program history.
A talented student, Kavel graduated from the Fuqua School of Business with a Master of Management Studies and will now pursue her studies further in law school. She was one of just two from the ACC to earn first team honors and one of three total, joining North Carolina's Sara Jubas and Clemson's Sam Russ.
