DURHAM – A host of current and former Duke field hockey players have been selected to compete in the 2022 Senior Nexus Championship (NXC), presented by Osaka Hockey. The event will be held at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va., from July 17-22.
Current Blue Devils
Paige Bitting,
Shelby Bumgarner, Alayna Burns, Barb Civitella, Alaina McVeigh, Hannah Miller, Grace Norair,
Josephine Palde, Macy Szukics and
Josie Varney are among the 144 athletes chosen to play in the tournament. Former Blue Devil
Leah Crouse also will join the fray. Bitting, McVeigh and Szukics all are entering their rookie season with the Blue Devils.
The Senior NXC is held annually and features 144 elite high school, collegiate and post-collegiate athletes. During the spring and early summer, athletes trialed and trained at one of the seven USA Field Hockey High Performance Centers throughout the country for an opportunity to be selected to the Senior NXC, a step along the Olympic Development Pathway program. All athletes that were previously on the Rise, U-21, Development and Senior U.S. Women's National Team were also included within the selection.
The event starts with a team training session on Sunday, July 17 with games starting on Monday, July 18. The opportunity to be selected for the 2022-23 U.S. Women's National Team and Junior USWNT Selection Camps are at stake.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the best field hockey players in the country come together at Virginia Beach," said Greg Drake, USWNT Head Coach. "This selection event is an important part of ensuring that the U.S. Women's National Team continues to grow and improve."
The Blue Devils return to campus in August in preparation for the 2022 season. The official schedule is nearly complete and will be released once finalized.
