BUIES CREEK, N.C. – No. 11 Duke softball (37-7, 16-3 ACC) ended the non-conference schedule on a high note, scoring 12 runs on 13 hits to defeat Campbell, 12-2, on Tuesday night at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Jala Wright (10-2) earned the win in the circle, allowing just three hits and two runs, while striking out six Camels (31-16, 18-6 Big South). Nine different Blue Devils reached base in the win, with
Ana Gold and
Kristina Foreman each driving in three runs.
The first inning started off quickly, as
Jameson Kavel walked and stole second base before getting to third on a fly out.
Rachel Crabtree promptly drove her in with a single, starting a three-run frame. The Blue Devils loaded the bases and Gold would make Campbell pay with a two-run single to lead 3-0.
While the Camels scored two in the bottom of the first, the Blue Devils quickly added on the next inning. Kavel was a catalyst once again, notching a single and stolen base to set up
Gisele Tapia who laced a single to right field for a 4-2 advantage.
In the third,
Francesca Frelick added another run to the lead, launching a home run to left center field for a 5-2 lead. Wright would continue to hold the Camels in check, striking out two in the bottom half of the third to maintain the lead.
After adding another run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch, the Blue Devils broke through on the offensive end in the last two innings. Crabtree tripled to reach base before Foreman plated her with a single to right center field for a 7-2 lead. Gold would drive her home on a bunt single that forced a throwing error by the Camels defense and
Caroline Jacobsen would tack on another run with a sacrifice fly for a 9-2 lead.
The Blue Devils ended the game with a power surge, as Tapia launched a home run to center field for a 10-2 lead. Foreman put the game on ice after Crabtree reached on an error with a booming home run of her own, to take a 12-2 advantage.
Claire Davidson would polish off three scoreless innings of relief in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
