NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation has named Duke redshirt senior linebacker Shaka Heyward to the 2022 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List.
Heyward is one of 42 student-athlete nominated for the 19th annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, which honors the top defensive player in college football who makes the biggest impact for his team, both on and off the field.
Heyward, a 6-4, 220-pound Dacula, Ga., native, led the team and ranked fifth in the ACC with 98 tackles last season. He chipped in a team-high 11.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one interception, one pass breakup and five quarterback pressures. Heyward also garnered three double-digit tackle performances and led or finished second on the team in tackles in 10-of-12 games.
Â
He has 246 tackles in his Blue Devil tenure as well as 26.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, two interceptions, one pass breakup, three fumble recoveries and 11 quarterback pressures to his name.
Duke's most recent finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy was former Duke linebacker Ben Humphreys in 2017. The Blue Devils also had finalists for the award in 2014 and 2015, with linebacker David Helton and safety Jeremy Cash, respectively, being honored. In 2020, Victor Dimukeje represented Duke as a semifinalist for the prestigious award.
Named after former NFL Hall of Fame star Ronnie Lott, The Lott Trophy annually goes to the Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year, a player who has had the biggest impact on his team both on and off the field. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity, all characteristics exhibited by Lott during his illustrious playing career.
Â
The annual winner is selected by a national voter panel, consisting of former winners, members of the media, coaches and members of the Board of Directors of The IMPACT Foundation.
Â
The winner is announced at a gala black-tie event at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Calif. The 2022 banquet will be Dec. 11.
