DURHAM – For the first time in program history, Duke softball will host an NCAA Regional, after being selected as the No. 12 seed in the nation, during the NCAA Championship selection show on Sunday night.
Duke is one of 16 regional hosts sites and is the top-seeded team in the regional, welcoming Georgia, Liberty and UMBC to Durham from May 20-22. No. 9 Duke is one of two ranked teams in the last NFCA poll to compete in this regional, joining No. 18 Georgia.
The Blue Devils will open their NCAA Championship run with a game against UMBC on Friday at 2:30 p.m., while Georgia will open with Liberty at 12 p.m. The regional is a double-elimination format.
The Blue Devils have been selected to compete in the NCAA Championship for the second time in program history and for the second consecutive year. Last season, the Blue Devils earned wins over UNC Greensboro and Western Kentucky during the regional, before falling to Georgia in Athens, Ga.
It's been a historic season for the Blue Devils, who recorded their first 40-win regular season in program history, setting new single season offensive records in hits, home runs, RBI, runs scored and total bases. Six different Blue Devils took home All-ACC honors, including
Jameson Kavel and
Peyton St. George on the first team.
