DURHAM – For the 22nd time in program history, No. 4 Duke women's tennis advances to the NCAA quarterfinals of the team championship after besting No. 13 Georgia, 4-1, on Friday night at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
The Blue Devils will make their third appearance in the last four years in the NCAA quarterfinal round. There was no NCAA tournament during the 2019-20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under head coach
Jamie Ashworth, Duke is 8-7 in the NCAA quarterfinal round. The Blue Devils await the winner of the super-regional match between sixth-seeded NC State and eleventh-seeded California, which is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. in Raleigh.
"First, congrats to Georgia on a great year," Ashworth said postmatch. "They made us play such a physical match. I'm glad we have a couple days off before we have to play again because I don't know if we could come out and compete at a high level again tomorrow. I keep talking about some choices our team had to make in the middle of March and they picked the tougher route and they're seeing the dividends of that now. We couldn't be prouder and more excited to be representing Duke next weekend in Champaign (Illinois)."
"A lot of resilience," Ashworth added when asked what he saw from his team tonight. "Just a lot of belief and trust in each other."
During Friday's match against the Bulldogs, No. 49
Chloe Beck and
Ellie Coleman got the night started by beating Mell Reasco and Dasha Vidmanova, 6-3, on court two of doubles play. The visitors pulled even after No. 20 Morgan Coppoc and Ania Hertel defeated No. 17
Georgia Drummy and
Karolina Berankova, 6-3, on the top court. With the doubles point coming down to the outcome on court three,
Margaryta Bilokin and
Eliza Omirou came through for Duke by besting Guillermina Grant and Meg Kowalski, 6-4.
Despite leading 1-0 heading into singles play, Georgia tied the overall match up following Hertel's 6-1, 6-3 victories over Bilokin on court five.
Rookie
Emma Jackson quickly answered for the Blue Devils by making quick work of Coppoc 6-0, 7-5 on court three. No. 9 Beck then handed Duke a 3-1 edge after she grinded out 6-3, 7-5 victories over No. 17 Reasco on the main court.
The final three matches of the day were forced into three sets. Fortunately, No. 14 Drummy found a way to rally back from a 6-4 first-frame loss to No. 99 Vidmanova on court two to register 7-5, 6-3 wins over the final two sets and claim the overall win for Duke.
"It's an amazing feeling when we're all out on the court giving everything we've got," Senior Drummy said of Duke's 22nd victory on the year. "It came down to my match at the end but there were two other girls out on the court still competing and the rest of our teammates were out on the sidelines, so it was just really nice having everyone supporting each other and giving it our all."
The matches on court four and six went unfinished. No. 106
Kelly Chen and Kowalski were knotted at one set each after Chen won the opening frame 6-3 and Kowalski the second, 6-2. Kowalski was leading the final set 5-4 when the match was halted. Coleman and Mai Nirundorn were also all squared at one set apiece. Coleman recorded a thrilling 7-6 (5) tiebreak win in the opening frame but dropped the second 6-4. Nirundorn was in front in the third set 3-2 when Duke clinched.
"This group really loves playing for each other and they look at every day as an opportunity to be together and play together," Ashworth said. "I know they don't want to see that end. It's not about the wins or the losses. For them, it's an opportunity to be together as a group and we've kind of taken that approach and they've handled it great. We're looking forward to that again."
Up Next
The Blue Devils bring an 11-game winning streak into next weekend's NCAA quarterfinal round which will be against the winner of the super-regional match between sixth-seeded NC State and eleventh-seeded California.
